An advertiser can bid on how much they are willing to pay per click or how much they are willing to pay per thousand impressions. The most common model is only paying when your ad is clicked.

Search Network Ads

A majority of these ads show up on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN as Search Network ads but they also show up on what is called the content network. The Search Network ads are the ads that show up on the very top and right hand side of the search engine results pages (SERP’s). For a diagram see the image below. The results are displayed in order based on how much the advertiser is willing to pay and how well the ad has performed in the past. This is called the quality score. The higher your ads quality score is the the less you will have to pay/bid to have the ad displayed in a higher position.

The Content Network

The content network is a series of sites that have allowed a search engine to place relevant ads on thier site. These ads often match the theme of the site or page that the visitor is on. When the ad is clicked by the visitor the search engine charges the advertiser the cost they were willing to pay (the bid amount) and they pass on a percentage of that fee to the host site where the ad was displayed and clicked.

Local Pay Per Click

You can also have your ads display based on geographic boundaries. If you are a local business that does not sell a product nationwide you can have your ads only display to people living inside your area of business. For example a business that provides Landscape Maintenance may advertise within 50 miles of their headquarters, but a massage therapist may only advertise within a 30 mile radius or among a certain zip code. This helps to ensure that you are not wasting your money on people who would not travel to take advantage of your offer.
